Dutch owner Royal Wagenborg is exiting the pure roro sector after selling the ice-class sister vessels Bothniaborg and Balticborg to Swedish shortsea operator Wallenius SOL. The roro ship sale also transfers Wagenborg's long-term contract of affreightment with Smurfit Westrock, covering cargo from the paper group's kraftliner mill in Piteå, northern Sweden. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What Vessels Were Sold in the Wallenius SOL Roro Ship Deal?

The two vessels sold are ice-class sister ships Bothniaborg and Balticborg. Both were built in 2004, each measuring 10,254 dwt and certified to Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A. Each ship offers approximately 1,635 lane metres of roro capacity. Since entering service, the pair has operated exclusively on the Smurfit Westrock trade, transporting forest products between the Bay of Bothnia and continental Europe.

What Cargo Contract Was Transferred Alongside the Ships?

The roro ship sale includes the transfer of a long-term contract of affreightment between Wagenborg and Smurfit Westrock. This contract covers cargo flows from Smurfit Westrock's kraftliner mill in Piteå, northern Sweden — a facility with annual production capacity of approximately 700,000 tonnes of kraftliner. Wallenius SOL will initially maintain the existing service before gradually integrating those volumes into its broader northern European network.

How Will Wallenius SOL Integrate the Acquired Vessels?

Wallenius SOL plans to evolve operations on the acquired trade in two phases:

  1. Near-term continuity: Maintain the existing roro service on the Smurfit Westrock route without disruption.
  2. Long-term integration: Transition the cargo toward roro cassette handling and eventually deploy vessels from its next-generation newbuilding programme on the trade.

The acquisition adds two more ice-capable ships to a Wallenius SOL fleet that already spans roro, conro, and container feeder tonnage — reinforcing the operator's ice-class coverage in northern European waters.

Why Is Wagenborg Exiting the Roro Sector?

Wagenborg stated that the sale allows the company to sharpen its focus on its core ice-class general cargo business. The Dutch owner is not retreating from Arctic-capable shipping — rather, it is doubling down on it. Earlier in July 2026, Wagenborg partnered with Carisbrooke Shipping to order up to 10 ice-class multipurpose newbuildings at China's Dajin Heavy Industries, with the first vessels scheduled for delivery from 2027.

How Has Wallenius SOL Been Expanding Its Fleet and Network?

Wallenius SOL has been actively growing through both acquisitions and ownership restructuring:

  • The company acquired UK-based roro and logistics operator Mann Lines in 2025.
  • In May 2026, Wallenius Lines completed its full buyout of SOL Group's stake, becoming the shortsea operator's sole owner.
  • The Wagenborg roro ship sale adds further ice-class capacity to a fleet that already covers key northern European shortsea lanes.
