Global seaborne bauxite trade has more than tripled in ten years and is running at another record pace in 2026, driven overwhelmingly by shipments from Guinea to China. According to analysis from Ursa Shipbrokers, ocean loadings rose from 81.3 million tonnes in 2016 to a record 247.5 million tonnes in 2025 — a compound annual growth rate exceeding 13%, far outpacing the wider dry bulk market.

Volumes reached 160.5 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2026, up 9.5% year on year, with July loadings jumping 20.9% to 22.8 million tonnes.

How Fast Has Global Bauxite Trade Grown?

Global bauxite trade has expanded at an annual rate of more than 13% over the past decade, outpacing virtually every other dry bulk commodity. Bauxite now accounts for 4.8% of global dry bulk loadings — up from just 1.8% in 2016 — underscoring how rapidly this trade lane has reshaped the bulk shipping market.

This growth reflects a structural shift in global aluminium supply chains, as Chinese refiners increasingly turn to long-haul Guinean ore rather than domestic or short-haul sources.

Where Does Most Bauxite Go? China's Dominant Role

China remains the dominant destination for seaborne bauxite, receiving almost 92% of all cargoes loaded in 2026 to date. China-bound volumes climbed from 52.7 million tonnes in 2016 to 218.7 million tonnes in 2025, accounting for virtually all of the net growth in global bauxite trade over the period.

Sustained Chinese demand — particularly from alumina refineries supporting domestic aluminium production — continues to underpin the trade's expansion and shows no signs of slowing.

Which Country Supplies the Most Bauxite? Guinea's Growing Grip

Guinea is now the world's leading bauxite exporter, supplying close to four-fifths of internationally traded bauxite. The West African country exported a record 127.4 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2026 alone, up 19.2% year on year, with July shipments surging 44.3% to 17.1 million tonnes.

Guinean exports have continued to rise despite government moves to exert greater control over raw ore shipments and push miners towards more domestic refining. Guinea's bauxite output rose 25% in the first quarter of 2026, supported by sustained Chinese demand, demonstrating the resilience of the Guinea–China trade corridor even amid evolving policy conditions.

What Ship Types Carry the Most Bauxite?

The long-haul Guinea–China route favors larger bulk carriers capable of maximizing voyage economics. Capesizes have carried 27.7% of cumulative bauxite volumes tracked since 2013, followed by newcastlemaxes at 18.3% and post-panamaxes at 16.2%. Together, these three segments account for more than 62% of total cargo intake.

This concentration in large vessel classes reflects both the scale of individual shipments and the economics of the Guinea–China distance, making bauxite an increasingly important revenue driver for owners and operators of Capesize and newcastlemax tonnage.
